 H ello everybody this is Ty! This week we all rotated through 12 hour night shift clinicals in the Maternity ward, we delivered a total of 11 babies. Jamie, Claire, Grace and I had a very eventful night delivering 6 babies. Unfortunately, Sophia, Brian, and Ainsley’s group only got to deliver 1. The final group—Kyrah, Ella, Casey, Evyn and Emma—had a night full of power outages, rain and 4 babies. While the night shift group was sleeping during the day, other groups got the opportunity to go on outreach clinics to different rural areas in Zimba. The first and last groups went to different schools and gave an endless amount of immunizations to the little kids. We also provided prenatal check-ups to pregnant women. They taught the kids games like Limbo, Hopscotch and Duck Duck Goose. My group was not quite as busy, but we got to visit 3 different small sites around the Silverlands Farm—one of the largest farms in the southern district here in Zambia.   The students participated in clinical outreach in the community -- lots of vaccines! Everyone had a night shift in labor and delivery with a total of 11 births over three shifts!  We saw our first rains in Zambia which was cause for celebration :) 

  Kamwamba! (Hello in Tonga)               It’s Sophia! I get to tell you about what we did today for Zambia's Independence Day (October 24). As we were walking in the market last week, we got several questions about what we would be doing to celebrate Independence Day. Like our Independence Day, many people celebrate with barbeques. The Zambians were very excited to celebrate. We drove a little over an hour to Livingstone to participate in an Independence Day parade. When we arrived, we saw a lot of groups of people, each with matching outfits. Anyone can choose to be a part of the parade, so we saw primary and secondary school students, nursing students, presidential election campaigners, and others. At Ba Brenda’s request, we all lined up with the Livingstone nursing school students who welcomed us with open arms to walk alongside them in the parade.   Mwabuka Buti! (Good Morning!) Hello everyone! This is Casey, and I have the honor of sharing this week’s update with you all. It’s been another full and exciting week here in Zimba. Monday: We kicked off the week with a full day of class. Both in the morning and afternoon. It sounded like a lot, but we managed to power through thanks to our wonderful professor, Debi, who always keeps things lively with interactive lessons, skits, games, and, of course, snacks. She also makes sure there’s plenty of coffee available, which we all agree is one of the greatest blessings of the week. Tuesday: We began clinicals earlier than usual so we could observe shift change at the hospital. It ended up being one of the most exciting days yet.   The students spent a day in the Mother Shelter, educating on pertinent topics and doing assessments.  Took about 6 hours to get Casey's Zambia hair out ;)                                     It was birthday week! Professor Debi celebrated her birthday on 10/17 and Grace and Jamie celebrated on 10/18!
