Macha, Zambia - Week 5

Hi friends and family! This is Ainsley, and I am writing the blog this week 😊 We had a very busy last week in Macha, filled with final projects, exams, clinicals, and goodbyes. I am going to continue to follow the previous blog outlines and share our team highs, lows, and buffalos for the week! Some of our highs for the week included a scavenger hunt throughout Macha, lots of volleyball and other games, and going to our guest house manager's home for dessert one night! We also went to the Macha School of Nursing and Midwifery to run through a "disaster simulation" with the local nursing students. This involved half of the group receiving a role card of a patient who was severely hurt in an accident and had to act it out. The other half of the group's task was to triage each patient appropriately. We loved spending time with the students, and they loved taking A LOT of pictures with us! Our lows for the week included studying for our final exams and saying goodbye to...

Macha, Zambia - Week 4

Hey Everyone! This is Kyrah! We are getting ready to finish our time here in Macha but wanted to give you all an update of the last week. We have been having a blast but also working hard. We can now confidently say we know our way around the hospital. Just as we are getting ready to leave of course. So much has happened, and I’m going to turn to our little tradition we’ve started: High, Low, Buffalo. High: We have had a lot of schoolwork this week, but one school related adventure was touring the Macha Research Trust for Malaria. They showed us their colonies of mosquitoes, mock chambers to run experiments in, and one particularly interesting experiment where they figure out what factors influence who mosquitos bite. In clinical, several of us have scrubbed into c-sections and are getting to see lots of new things. We have also loved playing with some of the kids at Push The Rock, teaching them games like duck duck goose, Simon says, and red-light green light. This Saturda...

Macha, Zambia - Week 3

Hello! It's Jamie here!      We have been in Macha for about two weeks, and it has been such a fun experience! We have a couple from Macha named Ben and Marjorie who are nurses at the hospital where we have clinical. They have been so sweet to us, giving us an orientation of the town and guiding us through clinical. They have also taught us some worship songs in Tonga, which has been so fun. This week, some of the team went on outreach for the first time, where they went out in the community to give vaccinations, prenatal screenings, HIV testing, and take vitals.      My friend Evyn introduced you to our highs, lows, and buffalos, and I would love to share the ones from this week!      A highlight is that we have delivered seven babies, and one of the students got to scrub in for a C-section. We also learned how to debone and eat a whole fish, head and all, though they did remove the eyeballs. J We played lots of card games and ...
